SID THE CYCLONE? WASHINGTON WINS LOTTERY
Will Washington grab Crosby?
(AP) New York - The Washington Cyclones defied the odds Saturday night to claim the first overall pick in the SPIHL Inaugural Draft. General Manager Bill Gamba received the news late Saturday while spending quality time with his wife and children via phone call from the SPIHL league offices. "When my phone rang at 11 o'clock, I had a feeling it was good news", said Gamba. "Personally, I didn't really care where we picked, and wouldn't have minded being in the middle of the round, but we'll definitely take it, and I expect we will make the right decision." When pressed on who the Cyclones were planning on choosing, Gamba was non-committal. "Oh, I don't know right now...its far too early, and we are still in the evaluating process. I'll sit down with team ownership and head coach Link Gaetz, and we'll discuss all of the possibilities. That said, it would be very, very hard to pass up a supreme talent like Sidney Crosby." Crosby is the 19 year old centerman out of Nova Scotia whom many scouts predict will be the best offensive hockey player since Wayne Gretzky. Gamba has shown a predisposition in the past to favor hulking defensemen and goon-like wingers, but Crosby's immense natural talent will make him extremely attractive to the Cyclones. If Washington elects to go for more of a scorer, forward Alexander Ovechkin may also be an option at #1. Here is the official inaugural draft order determined via lottery on Saturday, February 3rd, 2007:
